The New York Yankees will begin their American League Division Series against the Tampa Bay Rays without their captain and three-time American League MVP, Aaron Judge, after the club decided he was not yet ready to return from a right calf injury.
Judge was left off the Yankees’ 26-man ALDS roster despite making progress in his recovery and participating in recent live batting practice sessions.
The decision means he will miss another postseason series as he continues to work his way back from a moderate strain to the soleus muscle in his right calf.
The injury occurred on Sept. 16, shortly after Judge had returned from an earlier extended absence caused by a fractured right rib.
He played only seven games after returning to the Yankees before the calf problem forced him back onto the injured list.
