Dennis Hastert, the former Republican speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives whose political career ended in disgrace after a federal investigation exposed allegations of sexual abuse involving teenage students he coached decades earlier, has died at 84.
Hastert died over the weekend at his home in Illinois from natural causes, according to the Kendall County coroner.
He served as House speaker from 1999 to 2007, becoming the longest-serving Republican to hold the position.
Before entering national politics, Hastert was a teacher and wrestling coach at Yorkville High School in Illinois.
He later represented Illinois in Congress and rose through Republican leadership to become speaker during the administrations of Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush.
As speaker, Hastert played an important role in advancing the Republican congressional agenda, including major legislation during the Bush administration. His tenure also included the House’s impeachment proceedings against President Clinton.
