Cristiano Ronaldo has broken his silence over his dramatic departure from Portugal’s latest national-team camp, releasing a detailed personal statement in which he accused head coach Jorge Jesus of repeatedly failing to honor agreements.
The 41-year-old captain said the dispute was not simply about being left on the bench, but about trust, communication and commitments that he believed had been established between himself and the new Portugal coach.
Ronaldo acknowledged that he made mistakes in the way he reacted but insisted that the circumstances surrounding his departure needed to be explained from his perspective.
Disagreement Over Playing Time
The controversy began around Portugal’s Nations League fixtures after Ronaldo and Jesus reportedly discussed a plan to manage the veteran forward’s workload.
Jesus had previously said there was an understanding regarding Ronaldo’s involvement in the matches.
Against Norway, Ronaldo remained on the bench for the entire match despite warming up.
Jesus later explained that he had considered bringing Ronaldo on for approximately 30 minutes but ultimately decided that the circumstances of the match did not require the substitution. Portugal went on to win 2-1.
