This $131M Movie Saw Denzel Washington Team Up With Mark Wahlberg & I Think It Deserved Better….See more
The overlooked 2013 buddy comedy 2 Guns saw Mark Wahlberg and Denzel Washington team up in an iconic leading-man collaboration. Directed by Baltasar Kormákur (Everest, Adrift, Touch), 2 Guns is based on the Boom! Studios graphic novels written by Steven Grant. 2 Guns also features great supporting roles from Paula Patton, Bill Paxton, Edward James Olmos, Robert John Burke, and James Marsden.
2 Guns was a mild success at the box office upon its August 2, 2013, theatrical release, earning roughly $132 million worldwide against a production budget of $61 million. 2 Guns was just the 55th highest-grossing movie of that year despite its undeniable star power. By comparison, Frozen’s $1.28 billion topped the 2013 box office. While 2 Guns was certainly not as profitable as Washington’s Equalizer films or as well-received as Wahlberg’s best action movies, it ultimately deserved better.
DEA agent Bobby Trench (Washington) and U.S. Navy intelligence officer Marcus Stigman (Wahlberg) have been working with each other for a year as undercover agents. The only thing is, neither of them knows that the other one is working undercover. After a year of keeping up their aliases, Trench and Stigman team up after they failed a crucial mission to take millions from the Mexican drug cartel. They’re forced to go rogue and go on the run like a modern-day Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.
2 Guns received mostly positive reviews from critics, earning a Rotten Tomatoes score of 64%. Most of the positive reviews praise the undeniably captivating chemistry between Washington and Wahlberg, which is by far the biggest attraction of the film. Critics who gave the film a negative review noted that while Washington and Wahlberg make a great star duo, the film itself has many issues, particularly with its unimaginative narrative and action scenes.
