Chiefs ring error hurts Dolphins and doesn’t go unnoticed by fans: Could serve as motivation from a Dolphins bounce-back
During their Super Bowl LVIII ring ceremony on Thursday night, the Kansas City Chiefs unintentionally slighted the Miami Dolphins. Inside the championship rings, which commemorate the Chiefs’ path to success last season, the Dolphins were incorrectly listed as the seventh seed in the playoffs, though they actually held the sixth seed.
In reality, the seventh seed in the AFC was the Pittsburgh Steelers, who faced the Buffalo Bills in the Wild Card round. It remains unclear if this error originated from the ring designer, Jostens, or if it appears on the physical rings distributed to the players. “Utilizing a hidden hinge mechanism, the ring top opens to reveal additional storytelling on the interior of the ring,” Jostens wrote in a release.
“The reverse side of the ring top displays the last play called, ‘Tom & Jerry,’ which occurred in overtime to win Super Bowl LVIII. The play is drawn out using Head Coach Andy Reid’s handwriting. For the Dolphins, already stinging from their first-round exit, this error adds a layer of frustration. Their playoff loss to the Chiefs was particularly tough, managing only seven points against Kansas City’s 26, led by Patrick Mahomes.
This misstep by the Chiefs could, however, serve as unexpected motivation for Miami in the 2024/25 season. Seeing themselves inaccurately ranked inside the Chiefs’ rings, which are embellished with 529 diamonds and 38 rubies, might fuel their resolve. Armed with talents like such as Tagovailoa and Tyreek Hill, the Dolphins have the potential to rival teams like the Chiefs, who boast Mahomes and Travis Kelce.
